Mission Statement of the I.T.F.M.

The Institute of Theological Formation of Montreal of the Priests of Saint Sulpice (I.T.F.M.) is a private university in communion with the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. It offers academic formation to priests, religious and laity who want to take courses in order to earn a degree in philosophy, theology or pastoral theology. In addition, the Institute offers formation tailored to the general public: evening conferences, meetings and seminars. Degrees of I.T.F.M. are recognized by the Ministry of Education of Quebec.

History

A university tradition for over a century

The existence of the Institute of Theological Formation of Montreal is intimately linked to the Major Seminary of Montreal. In 1878, the seminary became a theological faculty attached to the Laval University of Quebec. This faculty obtained civil recognition in 1920. In 1925, it obtained its canonical status as a faculty of the University of Montreal. Until 1967 it was an establishment of the Priests of Saint Sulpice situated in the Major Seminary of Montreal. That year, the University of Montreal obtained a new charter. Therefore, all functions of the Faculty of Theology, that is administration and teaching, were fully integrated into the main campus of the University of Montreal. The faculty will be under the direction of the Priests of Saint Sulpice for some time only. This transfer of the seat of the faculty facilitated access to theological studies and to university degrees to a greater variety of lay and religious students.

An institute affiliated to the Lateran University

For its part, the Major Seminary of Montreal continued to specialize in the formation of future priests. In 1976, it resumed autonomous teaching at the Major Seminary on Sherbrook Street. The Center of Theological Formation of the Major Seminary, canonically considered as a Studium since 1978, obtained in 1979 an affiliation to the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome for the program in theology. Then, in 1986, an affiliation is granted for the philosophy program and in 1994 for the graduate program of Master in Pastoral Theology.

In 1988, the Center was raised to Institute by the Congregation for Catholic Education and since then bears the name of the Institute of Theological Formation of Montreal, the name registered in the province of Quebec in 1995. This clearer distinction between the "Major Seminary," a place of priestly formation, and the " Institute of Theological Formation of Montreal," a place of intellectual training in philosophy and theology, allows to welcome several lay persons among the students.

Civil recognition and autonomy of the I.T.F.M.

Civil recognition: the Law 278

On June 20, 1998, the Government of Quebec sanctions the Act 278, which acknowledges that: "The Priests of Saint Sulpice of Montreal have the authority to offer educational programs at the university level and to grant degrees, diplomas, certificates or other academic credentials for studies in the domain of the ecclesiastical sciences". The entry into force of this Act gives the right to award diplomas and degrees on the civil level in the domain of ecclesiastical sciences. All programs and diplomas of the Institute are officially registered with the Ministry of Education.

Autonomy of the I.T.F.M.

The Institute of Theological Formation of Montreal at the end of a thirty-year affiliation, has acquired maturity, stability, and recognition. On September 25, 2009, the Institute for Theological Formation of Montreal, owned by the Priests of Saint Sulpice of Montreal, became a corporation under the Religious Corporations Act. Accordingly, the I.T.F.M. is administered by the Priests of Saint Sulpice of Montreal who issue diplomas on the civil level under the Act 278.
